The Contrast Collection

Blog - Contrast Collection

We are proud to present Bang & Olufsen Interior Collection 2020:

THE CONTRAST COLLECTION

In line with our season collections, which we – inspired by the fashion industry – launch twice a year, Bang & amp; Olufsen now also introduces an annual interior collection. We aim to create products that you are not only proud of in terms of performance, but equally proud to have as part of your interior design.

When we select the colors, we gain inspiration from the global trends in interior design and design.
We select colors and materials that emphasize our honest and natural materials and our Nordic aesthetics
– which is made to look beautiful in the home.

Contrast by Bang & Olufsen is a collection about taking pleasure in difference
– between light and dark, silence and loudness, smooth and rough –
celebrating the elemental tensions that intrigue and excite us.

NORM ARCHITECS

CONTRAST has been brought to life through a fruitful collaboration with the Danish design studio Norm Architects. Well known for creating a portfolio of calming spaces designed for the senses, they regularly apply neutral colour palettes and use materials that have tactile surface textures. This was the perfect match for our ambitions at Bang and Olufsen to create a unique and sensorial collection with our audio lifestyle products.

After multiple iterations we defined the overall theme, leading to a mood board consisting of different materials and finishes. Integrating these materials and details into our products has been a long journey combining process with ambition and know-how.

ALUMINIUM

We have been experimenting with different surface treatments on aluminium for a long time. Originally these effects were intended for the previous Bronze Collection, but ended up not being mature enough to be implemented. There is a fine balance between presenting the application of a brushed affect as deliberate/controlled as opposed to it appearing to be damage, and after a long process we managed to achieve it giving CONTRAST much of its distinctive appearance.

ANTHRACITE

Aligning anodised colour across on-the-go, flexible living and staged represented a huge logistical and time- consuming challenge. The process started at Factory 5 where a master sample was defined and then distributed to all other suppliers for colour matching. Each product of this collection has different production processes and its own story to tell. However, detailed work combined with a lot of time and multiple trips all over the world led, ultimately, to CONTRAST.

THE BRUSHING PROCESS

Our journey started with hand brushing pieces of flat aluminium, to then implementing it on a curved texture with a robot rotating the cone. Once we approved the final ‘surface finish’ it still needed to be fully automated, meaning our engineers had to program, all of the above steps, to the machines and robots for mass production. It was the skill and perseverance of Factory 5 that helped the development of this surface as it doesn’t exist on anything else. In this sense, CONTRAST can be defined as being truly unique.

HALLINGDAL FABRIC

Hallingdal is Kvadrat’s first textile and one of its most popular sofa fabrics. The intention was to use a fabric texture that related to domestic interiors and helps integrate the collection beautifully into the home. Hallingdal is made of wool and viscose which are complementary to each other. The wool provides excellent durability and flexibility, whilst the viscose adds brilliance and depth to the colour. The original version uses thick yarns so we needed to adapt the structure in close collaboration with Kvadrat to make it acoustically transparent. After multiple iterations we found the right balance of loosening the fabric to pass our acoustic standards whilst at the same time maintaining the thick feeling in form of rich texture.
